Even though a story should not give itself away too quickly the reader should be able to identify with it right from the beginning to promote interest. This can be achieved by presenting the characters to us as interesting and three dimensional, when the you can identify with the characters: form an opnion about them and even attach emotion to them then we keep reading even though we dont know if the plot is good or not. The siblings' age would help the reader understand theire language and their thinking.
The plot and storyline are modern, the events past and present merge very well and i really enjoyed the descriptive language used.
The writing is precise and unpretentious,i am impressed by the fact that the writer does not try to use childish language that often makes a book sound silly. From this book a child would learn to appreciate beautifully written language and enjoy the vivid descriptions. Children outside the American culture however may have a hard time relating to some of the language used (eg African children whose vocabulary develops slower due to poor education standards and a culture that is very different) but at the same time it may be used as an opportunity to enciunter and practice new words.
