Matthias,
This was wonderful. I am not a fan of fantasy, but it does intrigue me. Your tale tells many truths about human nature. " They hoped for the best but prepared for the worst, they were optimists with pessimism, an all-too-common characteristic in people." This line speaks volumes about people, doesn't it? It is not a bad thing, just a true thing, eh? I loved your writing style. I'm very impressed.

It has been a while since I was twenty something, but your remarks sound vaguely familiar. You have captured the "essence of youth" using very appropriate language and insights. That was quite enjoyable. One thing I recall about being that age is that if I experienced any success, someone else took credit for it, ie: "I taught her that", or "I'm glad you followed my example" or "She must have paid attnetion to parents, school, or others". I try not to do that to the younger people I have contact with. I try to credit them for their own actions and ideas. Good job!
