We were having a general conversation and Ian said that his mother had sent him to elocution lessons as a child. "And what went wrong?," I asked playfully. The awkward silence which followed showed that I had inadvertently touched a nerve. Another friend hastily intervened to say that he too had been sent to classes by his mum to improve his diction, but had learnt "nuffink". It was all so curious. My partner was privately educated, so the idea of improving their speech would have been thought ridiculous in her family. For my part, I cannot imagine my own family giving a moment's thought to this curious idea, even though we were all fiercesome dialect-speakers in my house. Was this a case of class-insecurity on their mothers' part? Or did their mothers think their so-talented kids were destined for stardom? Disappointment all round, in that case. Ian's stories and anecdotes are great, I have to say. Perhaps this is what he learned while practicing "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain". (Though I think this is funnier said as "The ryne in Spyne fows mynely oan the plyne". I think I've got it!)
Hey, Eddie!

I am getting right back to you because I noticed what you dropped on me. Yikes!

Really and truly, you were too generous.

In fact, you shouldn't have been so, at all.

Heck, I don't think I deserved that for reviewing your work. I didn't review your work for a reward or recompense. I did it out of courtesy in kind.

You may not know, but I am here on a free subscription. It will be that way for a good while, until I decide if I wish to continue that way or not.

I won't make the commitment until I am sure of making a wise investment.

I need something that can convince me that I have what it takes to be a published writer. Fat chance, I say, realistically.

Later,

Alcides
