| Words: 300 // FOR "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" “Don’t say a word.” The club's motto was written up on a chalkboard at the door, and the members whispered it as they gave each other the special handshake. “Don’t say a word.” All fifteen members were present today, and every surface that could be sat on - chairs, the table, the rug, the floor ... were occupied. The chairperson rose and flourished her hands in the air. Everyone applauded. Someone raised a hand, and the chairperson pointed at her. The young lady rose, folded her hands and held them close to her forehead in the 'namaste' gesture, indicating thanks to the chairperson. Once more, there was applause. Then, the chairperson gestured to the window-ledge, on which were perched a jug, some paper cups and a few packets of cookies. There wee sighs of delight as members helped themselves to lemonade and cookies. The spies outside were baffled. "They haven't said anything," Sarah whispered. "Shh," Henry hissed back. "It's so quiet in there they'll hear us." "Yes, we did hear you," a voice spoke from above them. The children jumped, startled, and looked up at the face of their Principal. "We thought you'd be here," chairperson / Principal continued. "Want some lemonade and cookies?" The children were too scared to refuse. They tiptoed in, watched by the grim faces of their teachers. As they reached the front of the room, the laughter broke out. "We knew you'd spy," Henry's aunt Jane, who happened to be a teacher in his school, said. "We wanted to prove to you that we could do what we ask you to, and not say a word during lessons. Now, you two ringleaders, will you spread it around Third Grade that teachers can sit quietly themselves, and expect students to do so?" "Yes, teacher," mumbled Henry, nibbling his cookie. |
