Am I shaming myself or believing that grace isn't enough? Am I holding onto guilt after I have confessed my sins to God and know I have been forgiven?" When I was a very young everything, (age nine), I had a conversion experience. On the way home from church, my mom told me "You know this means you have to be sinless, right?" She then proceeded to show me in the King James how Jesus said we were to be "perfect" as God in heaven is perfect. I did not know that the word perfect for King James meant "mature". Neither did she. Perfect for me meant "sinless" and I beat myself up severely every time I fell short of that. Finally, an elder in a church I attended seen through my struggles and showed me how the meaning of the words in King James can change. For example, Acts 2:38 in King James says we are to be baptized for the "remission" of sins. Remission today is something that happens when a disease such as cancer is stopped. To the King James translators "remission" meant forgiveness. When Jesus said we were to be "perfect" as God is perfect, He was saying we were to be "mature". I can be mature and still fall short. Lack of concentration can be overcome though. If it happens to me, I go back and read what I already wrote. I am a graduate student trying to meet deadlines. I do not have time for writer's block so I read or work on a different project until the flow comes back. |
