Concrete and asphalt gobbled up the land,
like some PacMan monster's ravenous spree.
When mankind attempted to countermand
God's commandments with such audacity,
colossal structures were all you could see.

Behold! Dainty lilies of the valley
poke their heads up in a putrid alley.
In something akin to a Rugby scrum,
vibrant elements of Nature rally.
The power of God's grace will overcome.

TV commercials
imploring me to purchase
candy and jewels,

but she wants to buy
one-way ticket to Reno
for quickie divorce.

We danced lightly through time
in a tightly choreographed Utopia,
until it fell apart
in a heap of photographs and memories
of a life stained with lost love
and Mendocino wine.

I made her happy once,
but the sun went down on that romance
and left me wallowing
in the muck of deep despair.

Hoping for a change of luck
and some kind of distraction
to sooth my heart,
broken and wracked with pain,
I hopped in my royal blue El Camino
and headed east toward Reno
without taking a backward glance.

Amid the ruck of losers
at the glitzy Eldorado Casino,
I struck gold
when a lovely Angeleno lass
sat down beside me for a game of keno
and relief from the bruises of betrayal.

We hit it off right away
and went out for a cup of cappuccino,
before heading west
to celebrate a fresh start
with a bottle of Mendocino wine.

Majesty
evokes ooh’s and aah’s
from all who approach the scene.
Sprawling, curling limbs surround viewers.
Magnificent presence is
proof of God’s glory:
Angel Oak.

She woke last night
beneath warm quilts in a strange flat.
She woke last night
and soon remembered frantic flight,
escaping from the drunken rat.
Her mom’s relief spilled out so that
she woke last night.

The sounds of pain
still echoed in her tender ears--
the sounds of pain
announcing fury’s harsh refrain
because he’d had too many beers.
Her mom endured, through all those years,
the sounds of pain.

They’re free at last.
Away from that destructive life,
they’re free at last.
The bloodied lips are in the past.
They’re free to live without the strife.
He’ll have to find another wife.
They’re free at last!

I took the back road
down to Tupelo,
where fond memories
with deep Southern roots
and young boy's dreams flow
through my weary soul.

On a back porch swing
down in Tupelo,
sipping some iced tea,
thinking of Elvis,
I am channeling
king of rock and roll.

Note: The Tableau is a poetry form, invented by Emily Romano, constructed in stanzas of six lines with five syllables per line, as described and demonstrated in the following link: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/tableau.html
