Blog City - Day 1096

Prompt:
“Dance, when you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance when you’re perfectly free.”

Rumi

What do you make of this quote? What does Rumi mean when he says, “dance”?

Fabulous prompt!!!

My first thought in reading this quote had me immediately thinking of Lee Ann Womack's song I Hope You Dance. 'Dancing' is stepping out onto the dancefloor of life and expressing your true self. Not being afraid to go out there and just be yourself, living your life. I feel I have been sitting on the sidelines of life for too long... letting others dictate my path. It is my time to step up and dance. Through off the chains of fear and uncertainty and just experience the pleasure that comes from being who your really are...

Rumi may be deep, but his words express this same idea. Being who you are is the essence of what you are... it is your life's purpose. Dancing will move you towards being truly free. It will move your beyond the fear and the brokenness you have let trap you and hold you back. Break yourself open - be free of the past that has bound you. Tear the bandage off and let the air finish healing you. You can't heal properly if you keep things covered and protected. Step up and fight for your right to exist. We all matter. Don't let anyone try to put you in their box for you - that is crippling. Fight and break out. It may be bloody and messy, but if that situation cramps you, then it is not where you need to be... move on. Fell the fear, but do it anyway. Your life depends on it... and then you will be truly fee. Dance is your life. Show the world what you got and don't hold anything back. It's the music of your life. It's your dance. Let it illuminate you. Shine on!

Lyrics by Lee Ann Womack
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'
Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth makin'
Don't let some Hellbent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin' out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I am currently reading A Year with Rumi: Daily Readings. I do hope this poem is in there; because it is a wonderful one.

Blog City - Day 1095

A lot of celebrities, actors, musicians, and otherwise famous people died in 2016. Is there one you'll miss the most, or one who had any particular influence on any of your writing?

Some of the ones that happened are the ones you think are too young to go... David Bowie, Glen Fry, George Michael... music... many influenced my teenage years - the Eighties. Music has always been a creative source for me. I sing a lot.... and I often just make up my own words to random tunes.

My teenage years were years of poetry writing and listening to music - popular to classic. I even had a couple of friends who volunteered to DJ at the University of Guelph radio station - so there was a lot of alternative music in there as well - Depeche Mode and New Order - not the usual top forty radio hits.

I have always been one to focus on the words of a song. So without further ado, I give you listening memories of a time gone by... and some people lost to us as their voices sing on:

Glen Fry - The Eagles

David Bowie and Queen

David Bowie - Tribute to John Lennon

Blog City - Day 1083

Prompt: “Our minds are big enough to contemplate the cosmos but small enough to care about who wins an Oscar,” said Dean Cavanagh.
What do you think about the Oscars and what role has the Academy Awards played in your life this year or at any other time?

Our minds are big enough to contemplate the cosmos, but.... many of use chose to wallow in the pettiness of who was wearing what at the Oscars. Last year had the big hoopla was about Blacks not having enough representation at the Oscars - there was one film that should have been nominated but wasn't - Collateral Beauty, I believe it was. Though I sometimes wonder why some movies are nominated and others are not. Most of the nominees I have no interest in ever seeing as they seem boring. Some are just plain skanky - like anything with Seth Rogan or Will Ferrell (those two give me the creeps) - and it makes sense they are not nominated, but Collateral Beauty looked pretty good. Odd.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/oscars-2016-boycott-a-timeline-of-...

This year was dynamically different in that area. Hidden Figures, Fences and Moonlight.... as well as Lion. Definitely good representation this year... wonder if that has anything to do with snubbing T**rump. I had to chuckle sadly that the winner of best foreign film, from Iran, did not even come to get their award because they were boycotting the Ban. Sad, really, as this was their year to shine and T**rump crapped on that too.

Last year also have a lot of issues of sexist interview questions - asking woman how they manage to work and raise a family, but their husbands, also actors, were not asked those similar questions - inequality was the going concern last year.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-red-carpet-2015-battle-775698

This year... hmmm... maybe the mixup of La La Land getting Picture of the Year and than realizing it was supposed to go to Moonlight - from white to black. I am glad Moonlight won, but I feel a little bad that they missed the full hype because of the mixup. Still if I had to chose... I would have picked Hidden Figures. But nobody's asking me.

So, as you can see I have ranted on about nothing in particular... all when I should be contemplating how to ace my LTO list interview which is Thursday. It may not be the cosmos, but it is dealing with teaching and the molding of young minds - another step closer to getting a teaching job. That needs to take priority... but I may have to take a break to watch The Bachelor. Yes, I admit it, I am hooked. I sooooo want Corinne to gooooo!
Okay, enough... back to prepping for my interview.

Blog City - Day 1078

Prompt: Jacques Derrida in the Ear of the Other, writes: “Prayer works for many people; sometimes therapy works for me, but literature has really been the most reliable way for me to access emotion.”
What is your take on the quote? Do you get emotional with some of what you read or does your reading encourage you to discover different emotions for specific subjects?

This is one of those prompts that has me scratching my head and wondering where my brain disappeared to... I got a case of the 'stupids'. If I break this down I get 'the most reliable way to access emotion.' Does this mean being moved by what you read when literature is involved?

I think of the three Derrida mentions I think reading is the most accessible for me. I have never tried therapy - unless you consider writing as my therapy; and prayer... well, it is on a completely different level. I don't think I would go so far as to say literature because some of the stuff that moves me is lighthearted genre based reading. Jill Shalvis makes me laugh at myself as I am able to relate to the zany, authenticness of her female characters... and her male characters, as well.

The book I am reading today, Fortune Cookies by Heather J. Wood, had me crying when she discussed the Montreal Massacre - the killing of 14 women at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique. It happened 27 years ago, but the horrificness of it grabs me every time I read a reference to it. I feel the rage and the injustice of it, as well as the brutalness and insanity of the situation. Being killed just because some idiot can't stand women or feminists. Where do men get off thinking that they need to do this just because some woman turned them down? I realize not all men are like this... but women are often raised feel they need to coddle a man's ego. We have the right to turn down a date... we should not feel like we have to accept, just to keep some idiot's ego in check. If he is too weak to handle the rejection... maybe he should have killed himself first before brutally murdering 14 women. That goes for any murder - suicide situation. (Gotta rant)

In Wood's story, the heroine is dealing with the events as they unfold around her. The Massacre is only a snippet of many of the events she relates in the year of 1989... each event contributing to her own self construct of being a young woman and needing to protect oneself.

Blog City - Day 1077

Prompt: If you could write some advice for the entire humankind on a board or tablet where everyone could see, what would that advice be? It can be as short or as long as you wish.

Practice Gratitude and Be Kind To One Another,

In other words... appreciate everyone you have in your life and all you have in terms of the here and now.

Appreciate the good with the bad as each makes you the person you are.

Spread love and kindness, because you don't know what other people are going through. A kind deed or word can make the world of difference... you may just never know it.

Be the sunshine - even on a cloudy day.

Live the life you were meant to live. Don't play by other people's rules for you.

Keep Growing and Learning. Challenge yourself to be more.

'Rage, Rage, against the dying of the light.'

Blog City - Day 1071

Happy Valentine’s Day, Blog City!

Prompt: Talking about love, what do you think about people who believe the ideas on love that belong to others rather than finding out what love is for themselves and the persons who are always looking for their next love but do not work on trying to love themselves?

I think it is important to know yourself and what you want in life before you can share that life with another. I also believe you need to be able to love yourself before you can love another person. We all bring baggage and scars into new relationships. Being able to love yourself and work on what needs improvement helps to ease those old scars and lessen the baggage. Those things never go away, but self awareness makes you knowledgeable about trigger points and helps lessen the friction of life. Being open and honest with another who is equally open and honest makes for a connection that is stronger than two self absorbed souls trying to find love outside themselves - expecting their mate to give them all they need.

Happy Saturday. Here's to getting over this cold as it wrecks havoc on my brain capacity.

Blog City – Day 1061

When I was looking for something unusual for 30 Days prompt I went to random sentence generator and came up with a cool group of sentences. So I did it again for Blog City. The prompt is to take these 3 sentences and somehow incorporate them into your blog. Have fun.

1. Writing a list of random sentences is harder than I initially thought it would be.
2. Sometimes, all you need to do is completely make an ass of yourself and laugh it off to realize that life isn’t so bad after all.
3. Where do random thoughts come from?

So where do random thoughts come from? Why do they plague us so; rob us of sleep; distract us from the busi-ness of life. Lyn thinks that "writing a list of random sentences is harder than I initially thought it would be." And yet I find this group of random sentences to be intriguing in their own solicious way. Sometimes, all you need to do is completely make and ass of yourself and laugh it off to realize that life isn't so bad after all. All you can do is try and be open to the process. See what materializes and go from there. It keeps life interesting, that's for sure.

Blog City - Day 1031

Prompt: Life is about using the whole box of crayons. What is your take on this?

One must not be afraid to experiment
To try new shadings...
Varying the colour
Or changing it completely
To see something that lies within the image
The prospect of something more....
Staying within the lines is boring,
Pedestrian, beyond comfortable,
Stable, yet static.
Using only the basic of colours
limits our view.
To be dynamic and alive
We must add in a few new colours
Don't be afraid to use the whole box...
Experiment with the complexity of light and dark,
Sharp and bold,
Subtle and shimmering.
Draw your own lines.
Don't settle for the contours of others,
Defined by expectations and social restrictions.
Break out.
Let your creativity flow and see where it leads you.
Don't be afraid to follow where it takes you
Be amazed at the dramatic blaze of colour
Your life can become, if you just let yourself...
Be open to it all.

Blog City - Day 1010

Prompt: What is the worst thing that happened to you this year? What is the best thing that happened to you this year?

The worst thing is having my marriage come to an end. That has failure stamped all over it. Having to move back in with my mother makes me feel like I am truly a screwup in all things adult.

The best thing that happened.... that is harder to say... there were many little things - like reconnecting with friends... living with my mother.... having more freedom, but the best thing.... I guess, I am still waiting for it.
