There are all of three reviews of this book on Amazon, and all of them compliment the premise of the book (that an officer and a known terrorist have to team up to accomplish their mission). All three reviews talk about how exciting and packed full of action, twists, and turns the book is. Which may very well be true, but I'll never know because I stopped reading after 100 pages because nOtHiNg wAs hApPeNiNg. I get really annoyed when books - and science fiction books in particular - mistake "worldbuilding" for "narrative" and forget that the most important things to most readers are a compelling story and interesting characters. I get it, the author has envisioned this multi-book series based on a universe he's been developing since the age of ten when he first saw Star Wars and it changed everything for him, blah blah blah... but it still also has to be a good story, and detailed description of the geopolitical backdrop of the setting and detailing the characters' vibrant (but ultimately unnecessary) backstories before you care about the characters, just aren't going to cut it. Also, I've literally lost track of the number of sci-fi series with the word "Confederation" in them... Overall, this just didn't really do anything to stand out from any of the thousands of other self-published sci-fi books with similar premises and characters. It wasn't badly written but it was so generic that I expect to have trouble recalling any specific details a couple months from now. | ||
