I don’t read much historical fiction, so I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this book. But I’ve read a lot of Minette Walter’ crime/psychological thrillers and loved them all, so I thought I’d give this a try. Boy, am I ever glad I did!

The novel is set in 1348 at the onset of the Black Death. It centres around the demesne of Develish in Dorsetshire and follows the serfs and gentry as they try to contain the illness and survive in its wake. From the spoiled girl, Lady Eleanor, to the handsome and brooding Thaddeus, this is an exciting and thrilling read. It is about comradeship and working together. It is also teaches us that, while everyone may not be exactly equal, we all have equally important roles to play.

I loved this book. I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Fans of historical fiction, like Kate Mosse. But, actually, I think most people would enjoy this. It has a slightly ‘Game of Thrones’ feel to it, but not in nearly as grand a way.

The plot. Thaddeus and Lady Anne are awesome characters.

I’ve read Minette Walters’ thrillers before, and I loved those. I wasn’t sure how she would fare with this switch in genre, but she handled it brilliantly.
