Summary of this Book...
This is one of the books set in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe that predates the main books. It covers the history of Targaryen reign 300 years before the story we know as A Game of Thrones begins.
This type of Book is good for...
I would say that it's good for anyone who likes fictional histories, though I might not recommend it for all Game of Thrones fans (or even all Martin fans.)
I especially liked... | ||
I'd say that thing that I liked best about the book is the insight that it gave me into a major plot hole that I'd had with season 7 of the show inspired by the series.
I didn't like... | ||
I didn't like how I felt while reading. I felt like a lot of what the book did was justify things that people had said in the late seasons of the show, almost like it was backing up all my least favorite parts.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Write. I wanted to write something that improved on the areas I thought could have been so much better.
This Book made me feel...
Frustrated. I think that it wanted to shine a light on the hypocrisy and sexism that goes on in the universe that Martin has created (a reflection of our own history) but the way that it timed out with the show made me really frustrated. In the show they'd been moving toward a more progressive environment for years and just when that was starting to be threatened, the author of the books released this prequel where things were even more awful. It felt a lot like "here's a bunch more times where women didn't get what they deserved, and why things won't go well for women in the future" and even though I know that wasn't the intent, I got frustrated.
The author of this Book...
Is a talented storyteller and builds amazing worlds. I just wish that he would focus a little more on his timing, pacing, and prioritizing.
I recommend this Book because...
It explains a lot, even when you don't want it to.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It is incredibly frustrating. It also is a history, so it doesn't carry the same involved, entertaining, sensationalized story that many of Martin's books do.
