Summary of this Book...
It is the beginning of 1938. Things are starting to deteriorate into what will become WWII. Maisie Dobbs, who has lost her husband and daughter, is recruited for a secret assignment by Robbie MacFarland of Scotland Yard. She is to go to Munich to bring back a man imprisoned at Dachau. It was a great and compelling read all the way through, but some of the plot was implausible, like Maisie giving in to fetching the daughter of the man who was responsible for her husband's death. She is supposed to be undercover and is dealing with Nazis so the subplot defeats the main plot in too many ways. Then, there is not a good explanation for why Maisie waits to return home. It doesn't accomplish much that she returns to her hotel and spends another night in such a dangerous city. The setting and the action are stellar, but the plot is a bit unbelievable and convoluted. This could have been great, but it is still pretty darned good. I am still enjoying my reading in the Maisie Dobbs series, but I found myself longing for the old main characters of Billy and Maurice and even Stratton.
