Poetry must be available to the public in far greater volume than it is. Books of poetry should be brought to the public to their doorstep, like milk or distributed freely in supermarkets and outside of assembly plants and factories, according to U.S. Poet Laureate Joseph Brodsky in a 1991 speech at the Library of Congress.

The American Poetry & Literacy Project was born and 101 great American Poems is the first anthology compiled by the APL project, a non-profit organization.
Focusing on popular verse from the 19th and 20th centuries, this treasury of great American poems invites poetry lovers to savor a taste of the nation’s rich poetry legacy. It includes Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson as well as works by Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Ezra Pound, T.S. Elliot and other notables.
