Summary of this DVD... | ||
This is a movie classic that I have seen many times. Lately, I have been watching the films of 1939, and it has been a while since I've seen this one. In some ways, this movie was so far ahead of its time that it is even more amazing to me after having watched some of the films of that great year. The two standout performances to me this time were Clark Gable and Hattie McDaniell. I found Vivian Leigh and Lesley Howard to be a bit overdone in their performances. Olivia de Haviland was very good, but Gable and McDaniell were the ones that really stood out with well rounded performances that included a bit of humor at times. Vivian Leigh wasn't that good at self deprecation to pull it off. I enjoyed the film and the story and this is many years after I saw it for the first time. It is not the greatest film or the greatest story I've ever seen on the screen, but it certainly ranks up there with the best, especially for 1939. Gable was robbed of the Oscar by Robert Donat. Total robbery.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
watch some more of the films from 1939.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
is really good. I mean they are flawless, but there is a bit of overly dramatic acting from Leigh and Howard. It doesn't prevent me from thoroughly enjoying the movie, even now at this late date in time.
