Summary of this DVD... | ||
This is a movie that is based on one of my favorite books, John Irving's A Prayer For Owen Meany. I saw the movie before I discovered the book. It is the story a of two young boys, Simon (who is very small) and Joe. Joe does not know who his father is and the boys launch a quest to find out who this might be. Simon is rejected by his own parents even though they are present. To complicate matters, Simon becomes the instrument of Joe's mother's death. She dies before she can tell anyone who his father is. Before she dies, she meets a man who will become a real father to Joe in every way except bloodline. His name is Ben.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who enjoys a heartwarming story that is funny and entertaining. It is set in the early 1960s and the music is fabulous!
I especially liked... | ||
Oliver Platt as Ben. I love the character of Ben because he is someone who cares about a child, when he doesn't have to. Ben wants to do what is right after he loses someone he loves. Ben is more of a father to Joe and Simon then their own fathers could ever be.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
see more movies starring Oliver Platt. I also wanted to read the book it was based on. This is a rare case where I saw the movie before I read the book by John Irving.
This DVD made me feel...
sad, but hopeful in a positive way.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
is excellent. Ashley Judd is wonderful and so are the boys who play Simon and Joe.
I recommend this DVD because...
It is one of my favorite movies of all time. And, seeing the movie led me to one of my favorite books. The book is much different and more involved than the movie.
Further Comments... | ||
This movie is for anyone who admires those who care for children out of a kind heart and not the obligation of being a parent. It is about what selfless parenting really can be. Oliver Platt is amazing in the role of Ben. He will always be a favorite of mine because of the work he does in this movie. I do not know why this movies wasn't a success. I only discovered it on DVD, but it is one of my all time favorites!
