Summary of this Book...
Henry VIII is perhaps the most interesting of all Britain's monarchs, particularly when it comes to his personal life. The Church of England was founded by Henry in his quest to find a Queen who would give him a son. Of Henry's six wives Anne Boleyn is the most famous and possibly the most fascinating. The machinations of her family, however, are not so widely publicised. Their use of both daughters to advance the Boleyn name in society is ruthless and determined. Mary is a newly wed girl when she is told by her family to seduce the king. She is just 13 years old, and her duty to her family is stronger than that to her husband. Although she gives birth to Henry's daughter and his son, he is determined to have an heir by his wife rather than mistress. The family, sensing Mary's hold upon her lover is slipping, order her to step aside so her older sister Anne can take her place in Henry's affections.

The descriptions of daily life at court - the author painted a vivid picture of a fascinating period in history. Her characters are well defined and believeable
Further Comments... | ||
The interaction between family members, friends and their relationship with Henry is fraught with tension and even conflict. The fact that we know Ann's fate does not detract from this book in any way - instead it enhances the reading. While Ann may not be the most likeable person her desperation as she fails to give Henry his ultimate dream and the lengths to which she goes to achieve the aims of her family and the king gives the reader an empathy with her.
