Summary of this Book...
Edited by Mark Salisbury, ‘Burton on Burton’ is a fascinating insight in to the life and career of the eccentric director Tim Burton. This revised edition also includes a new foreword by regular Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood etc), affectionately reflecting on his work with Burton and their friendship. Not quite a biography, the book follows Burton’s life from childhood to fatherhood, however the emphasis and focus is on his career. Though his childhood, social life and relationships are mentioned, they are not discussed in detail. You are left with the impression that he is very guarded of his personal life and that some earlier memories may even be somewhat painful, but he does relate how being something of a loner and being different may have influenced his movie making. Known to be somewhat quiet and introverted, here Burton discusses his work passionately and in-depth. The writing flows well with an easy, almost conversational tone in the style of an interview. From his beginnings as an animator for Disney’s ‘The Fox and the Hound’ to his latest stop motion movie ‘Corpse Bride’ each project is discussed in detail, from its creation to its release. This book is a very easy read, with chapters broken down into small chunks, interspersed with illustrations and photos. The reader is provided with his thoughts at the time of production and retrospectives, which are particularly interesting when you see how he has recreated icons such as ‘Batman’ and ‘Planet of the Apes’ in his own unique style. This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in Burton’s work.
