Summary of this DVD...
During the time when Hollywood was making itself known, a Japanese director called Akira Kurosawa was also making films in Japan, and I think China as well. His films were mostly in his native language and I guess they weren't as well recognised as the US movies.
His movies are known now and they are truly works of art. Seven Samurai came out in 1954 and it would later inspire the Magificent Seven in the US.
The story is about a village that's being threated by bandits, so the villagers send out one of their men to try and hire anyone to help them defend their homes against these bandits.
Eventually the man manages to hire seven men, all of them samurais. After they agree to help defend the village, they begin to train the villagers to be of help when it comes to defence and I'll stop there, I don't want to ruin the movie.
This type of DVD is good for...
Well anyone looking for something different, something other than movies made in the US, and if you like classic movies, then it's even better because this is a truly classic film. Also if you're looking for something new, then it's worth watching.
I especially liked...
Everything, the Japanese language in the movie is truly beautiful to hear and the English subtitles can be helpful. The acting is excellent and sometimes even funny in the more light hearted scenes like near the start, the interactions with all the characters, and the training scenes.
I didn't like...
When the movie finished, I wanted more. The movie lasts for a fair while, yet it only feels like it lasts barely an hour, it's quite fast paced, especially when you're gripped.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Find and watch more of Kurosawa's movies, I've seen a few now and I've loved them all.
This DVD made me feel...
Not bad, I quite enjoyed seeing something truly different. It made me wish I had seen it when I was in school years ago, I would have enjoyed that lesson.
The cast of this DVD...
I don't know a lot about them. One of the main characters in the movie does appear in a few more of Kurosawa's movies. They're all excellent actors though and they bring such wonderful life to their characters.
I recommend this DVD because...
It's a true classic, it shows how movies could be done.
I don't recommend this DVD because...
Well not everyone likes classic movies, for a lot of people, a classic movie is one filled with special effects and nothing else. It is in black and white and the English is in subtitles, so a lot of people are likely to pass it over for those two things. Which is a shame.
Further Comments...
Before I saw this movie, I had only ever heard about it and I was curious about it. Since I live in the UK, I watched the PAL version, but the US version should be more or less the same.
I have always loved the older movies before the days of computer made effects, so seeing this movie was a delight for me. I have also always loved the Japanese language and seeing a film made in Japan that has the main language as Japanese was even more of a bonus.
If I were to give a list of what movies people should see before they die, I would place Seven Samurai at the top with the Godfather movies just below it as true classics that truly are movie masterpieces.
Highly recommended, if I were to give a rating, then 1000 out of 100. I loved it that much.
