Summary of this Book...
This book grew out of an essay which was designed to show another, darker side, of Christian History. The author writes: Several years ago I listened in amazement as an acquaintance spoke of how the Christian Church had emboided the best of Western civilization and hw it had brought peace and understanding to the people it touched. He seemed entirely unaware of the Church's dark past. I decided to prepare a short presentation chronicling the dark side of Christian history - a presentation to help balance the perception that organized Christianity has historically lived up to its professed principles and ideals. This is the theme of the book. In the following chapters, the author presents her arugments. Chapters include exploration of the church's themes on sex, free will, reincarnation, women, use of force, the inquistion, and the witch hunts.
This type of Book is good for...
exploring a side of Christian history that, while happened, has not really been examined.
I especially liked... | ||
The author makes her points and then moves on. There is no overly long discussion about certain topics.
I didn't like... | ||
N/A | ||
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
find more material, as the author peeked my interest on the subject.
This Book made me feel...
Sad. I know that is a generic word, but if you read the work objectively, it is sad to realize that yes, the church had a part in all of these "darker" aspects of its history.
The author of this Book...
Appears to have researched her topic well. Some of the quotes she uses from St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinias, and even Martin Luther will shock you.
I recommend this Book because...
I do believe it is objective and if you want a more balanced perspective on the history of the Christian church, this is it.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It does address the darker aspects of the church and religion.
Further Comments... | ||
It is a very interesting read, but not for everyone.
