Summary of this Book...
This is a compendium of three books by Richard Brautigan-- "Trout Fishing in America," "The Pill vs. the Springhill Mine Disaster," and "In Watermelon Sugar." These are perhaps the best examples of American absurdism to date, with perhaps the exception of "The Hawkline Monster," by the same author.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone interested in the absurd, anyone with a very openminded sense of humor, anyone who appreciates beat poetry.
I especially liked... | ||
the variety. poetry and absurd fiction in one handy volume.
I didn't like... | ||
In Watermelon Sugar as well as the others. Though it does complement them well, it's not his best work.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
finish my own semi-fiction novel already.
This Book made me feel...
excited. It can be confusing at times, but... it all just fits.
The author of this Book...
was a prolific beatnik with some demons in need of purging. His vision of America was the vision of the original counterculture.
I recommend this Book because...
I understand it. No, really. I can understand what makes Brautigan's work. It is an inspirational volume to me. If you have ever wondered how I wish I could write, read this.
I don't recommend this Book because...
there are some people out there who don't believe in absurdism. Those are the kind of people who kill imaginations left and right with a single negative tone. this book is not for them.
Further Comments... | ||
I'm biased. I'll say that right now. It seems to me that a lot of authors here have their artistic patron saints and... well, here's mine.
