"Haunting The Chapel" captured Slayer on the rise. The unbridled ferocity of these three tracks instantly garnered the band credibility in the hardcore metal scene of the mid 1980's. HTC shows Slayer developing their own unique sound, as opposed to the very derivative "Venom meets Metallica" style on "Show No Mercy". "Chemical Warfare", and "Captor Of Sin" define the early Slayer sound, crushing all with sinister riff ing and the unbelieveable drumwork of Dave Lombardo. The title track showcases Lomardo at his best. Despite the mix being a bit unkind to the drum sound overall( it was 1984) the drumwork, especially on "HTC", is in my opinion without peer. Too bad it's only three songs, the fourth track is an old cover tune and was not part of the original release. An essential for serious fans of the genre. "HTC" still holds up today, they just don't make 'em like the mighty Slayer anymore, do they? | ||
