Summary of this Book...
Cliff Janeway is a bookman, that is, he buys and sells rare and valuable books. This occupation is usually peaceful, but once again it involves him in trouble and danger.

Janeway buys an expensive first edition by the 19th century travel writer Richard Burton, who had inscribed it with a personal note to a Charles Warren.

After publicity about his purchase, Janeway receives by post another first edition by Burton, which is also inscribed to Warren. The sender visits him; an elderly lady who claims that an inscribed set of first editions, complete except for this one, were stolen from her grandfather, Charles Warren. If the book Janeway bought was one of the set, then it was stolen property. She extracts a promise from Janeway to find the books.

He sets out to keep that promise, and along the way makes both friends and enemies. Murder, theft and fire follow. He hears Charles Warrren's story from the distant past, through the voice of the old lady. Little by little he unravels the history of the men and the books. Romance and danger entwine, and relationships are tested to breaking point.
