Summary of this DVD... | ||
In the Star Trek universe, The Dominion war is over, The Romulan Senate has fallen, and a new Romulan Praetor is ready to talk peace with The Federation. But it soon becomes apparent that Shinzon is not all he has claimed to be, but quite a bit more, and that peace may be the last thing on his agenda. One of the darker entries in the Star Trek movie series franchise, this is also one of the best.
This type of DVD is good for...
Trekkers will obviously get the biggest kick, but those who enjoy moody political thrillers with a hefty dose of action and an unsettlingly personal edge will also get an extra treat.
I especially liked... | ||
Tom Hardy's performance as Shinzon is wonderfully evocative and multilayered. There is also a genuine sense of character development for the regulars, and perhaps for the first time, we have a 'pure' TNG film that celebrates the best aspects of that series.
I didn't like... | ||
With the exception of First Contact, all the TNG films have suffered from lack of exposure of supporting characters. LaForge, Crusher, Troi, and Worf are really given very little to actually DO in this movie. If you can accept however that this isn't about them, you'll have a great time.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Go back and watch the classic TNG episodes all over again because....
This DVD made me feel...
This film made me very nostalgic and played out like the best Trek yarns the likes of which we haven't seen in years.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
Are faultless. You get to that point when you've been playing a character for 15 years you just understand them inside out and the TNG cast have surpassed that point. It's just that many of them are given so little opportunity to express it. Still, the great supporting cast makes up for that.
I recommend this DVD because...
It follows the formula that made First Contact such a wonderful crossover hit. A mainstream-accessible story, a memorable villain with a terrible agenda, and strong use of evocative character development. This is a great escapist film that all fans, and most other folks should enjoy.
I don't recommend this DVD because...
Star Trek is largely dead. You may look rather geeky if your friends see it on the coffee table.
Further Comments... | ||
A top film in any universe. Not the greatest sci-fi (or even Trek) film ever made, but definitely worth a look.
