Amelia "Mia" Thermopolis Renaldo is a normal teenager who lives in a renovated firehouse in Manhattan. Like every other teenager, she struggles with friends, crushes and algebra. Then one day, while rock climbing at the local recreation center, Mia's mother tells her that her grandmother (on her diseaced father's side of the family) wishes to meet with her. Mia visits her grandmother and finds out three life-changing details about her family members and herself.
