Summary of this Book...
Ender, or Andrew Wiggin is taken by the International Fleet to train to be a soldier to combat the Buggers, an alien race who has already attacked Earth twice. Ender is drafted due to his phenomenal intelligence. At the tender age of five. In Battle School, the children are taught war, the history, strategies and the ruthlessness. The book follows Ender on his journey to soldier, and through the emotional trials that becoming a fighting machine entails. Meanwhile, his genius brother and sister are making plans back on Earth, plans that could determine the fate of the world! *Cue dramatic music*
This type of Book is good for...
Proving that children really can be geniuses, political figures and downright scary.
Also, this is a great story, with a solid grounding in real life. Its science fiction at its best!
I especially liked...
I liked all the tactics and strategies for the Battle room, and the mock battles.
I didn't like...
I wasn't especially fond of the beginning, there's just this one line that rings a bit tinny for me. It goes like "They could have unplugged him for all time..." I don't think that's really it, but when you read it, you can tell me! :D
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I mostly wanted to hunt down the rest of the series, but also do something important. I am now plotting rebellion against the EVIL French teacher I have. Important, huh?
The author of this Book...
Is Orson Scott Card, who has written many other books, including: Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind (The other Ender books), Ender's Shadow (The parallel Ender book) Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets, the sequels. There's also "First Meetings" Which is a book of four short stories in the "Enderverse"
I recommend this Book because...
Its damn good, really good, excellent, wonderful, insightful, innovative, creative, thought-provoking, beautiful, fantastic, fantabulous, top-hole, and a nice book too.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It appears to be a low level book, especially when you get the kid's version, which has an extremely scary cover, but it was actually written for adults. Still, its a bit embarassing to look like you're reading an eight-year-old book. Unless, of course, you happen to be eight years old.
Further Comments...
Orson Scott Card has a website, www.hatrack.org, where he has articles, excerpts, short stories, bulletins, columns, and other goodies. There is also philoticweb.net, which is a purely Ender fan resource, complete with a thoughtful and nice forum.
