Summary of this Book...
A young female wizard named Kyra is estranged from her family because they view her magic as "dangerous" and "different". While studying at a magical college she hears that her younger sister is to be married--not good news considering that she had a premonition that her sister was to die on her wedding night. After a separation of six years, Kyra swallows her pride and returns home to her family in order to discover who wants her sister dead and why--hoping to save her life in the process.
I especially liked...
EVERYTHING! I have not fallen in love with a book this way in years! The descriptions are gorgeous, the characters are totally engaging, and I felt drawn into a "real" fantasy world as I followed Kyra's adventures.
I didn't like...
There was NOTHING I didn't like about this book. It is the best fantasy book I've read in years and has renewed my enthusiasm for the genre!!!!!!
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Run right out and buy every Barbara Hambly book in existence! Also, I wanted to write to her and thank her for giving me that most magical of experiences---the feeling that I'd truly escaped the real world and lived in a beautiful fantasy for awhile.
This Book made me feel...
Excited, uplifted, thrilled. I felt like a kid--like when I was ten years old and read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle for the first time. It was that same sense of "wow"! I think because now that I am a writer myself, it is often difficult to stop looking at how author's work their craft and just relax and enjoy a story. :)
The author of this Book...
Is terrific. I went out tonight and got three of her books from the library and am going to spend the weekend reading, reading, reading!
I recommend this Book because...
It's fun, it's touching, it's magical, and best of all it has a heroine that you can really feel for and root for!
I don't recommend this Book because...
There is no reason not to recommend this book, it's wonderful.
Further Comments...
I've long mourned the loss of Roger Zelazny as he was my favorite fantasy author. Although I can't have him and his work back, I can find a new author to be my new favorite and I have---her name is Barbara Hambly!
