Summary of this Book...
The art of drawing manga, and step-by-step guides which are easily followed, no matter what your skill level is. It's not so much drawing comics, with guides to inking, paneling, and so on, but some ideas for drawing characters, and showing poses they can be put in, as well as details for a successful comic.
I especially liked...
He has a very nice section on fantasy creatures. All the differnt poses and character types he showed, as well as the variety, and the simple guides.
I didn't like...
Some parts seemed to be aimed for a younger auidence, as well as some of his commentary its quite cheesy. Also he doesn't cover as much as I think he could.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Try out my newly learned skills. Also read the new follow-up, Anime Mania which is just as good as the 1st on.
The author of this Book...
I was suprised to find this, most of his previous books are very cartoony, and definatly for younger artists...not that there's anything wrong with that, I just prefer drawing things you'd find in Record of Lodoss War, or Princess Mononoke as opposed to a certain section of the Sunday paper...This was a far cry from those however, and I really enjoyed this book and found it helpful.
I recommend this Book because...
As I said, I did enjoy this, and I found it helpful; it gave me a good start for the style of drawing that I found to fit me, and that I draw in.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I was kind of annoyed to find it had about seven pages devoted to robots, and only one picture of a horse, which wasn't even set up in a grid or with guidlines. But I do like the book overall, it gives a nice look at some popular manga elements, even if it doesn't go into detail about everything.
Further Comments...
I recommend checking this book out from your library if not buying it. It gives some helpful suggestions and shows some tricks of the trade to those who enjoy manga.
