Summary of this Book...
Young businessman Jonathan Harker visits an obscure castle in Transylvania in order to finalize a real estate purchase for an eccentric old man named Count Dracula. While he is there, he realizes he is never meant to leave... alive. Meanwhile back in Whitby, Harker's fiancée waits anxiously for his return and worries about her best friend who has two small punctures in her throat. A ship, unmanned except for its dead captain lands at Whitby also, around the time that an insane patient starts raving about the coming of his Master... Only the old magic can stop the un-dead from taking over everything a small group of adversaries hold dear...
I especially liked... | ||
Mina Harker née Murray. Probably one of the best female characters written by a man in the Victorian age that I've ever read.
I didn't like... | ||
The bad theology. Stoker treats Christianity as if it's only a form of magic and uses 'magic' talismans (i.e. a crucifix, the Host) to ward off evil. Also, I don't really care for the fact that people have no choice whether they get bitten or not, once bitten, their soul is damned unless their body is freed from its Undead frame. Also, beware to those of weak constitutions, this is a bloody book and even gruesome in some parts.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the end again. The ending is well done, but a little rushed and leaves a few questions unanswered.
This Book made me feel...
Frightened! I tend to get nightmares easily anyway but for a week I refused to read the book at night.
The author of this Book...
Is very creative. I had no idea that a novel as long as Dracula would be so satisfying a read in its form of journal entries and letters.
I recommend this Book because...
It's brillant. If you like vampire stories, you simply must read this because it is the book that started it all.
I don't recommend this Book because...
Read above in the "I didn't like" section.
Further Comments... | ||
I found the first page of the book sleep-inducing and only because I had to read this for an assignment did I read on. It does get better so stay with it. Also, in the fashion of Victorian novelists, Stoker tends to overdo the description of setting and it's easy to get bogged down in it.
