Summary of this Book...
the stories of heroic yet ordinary people in a time of great conflict, deprivation and war. Beginning with Depression and Pearl Harbor, and continuing with the war in Europe, the Pacific and at home here in the USA, this book shows our rich legacy of heroism. Loaded with photographs, documents, and photocopies of letters, dogtags, medals of honor, logs and records, it gives glimpses into the everyday lives of people in that era making history without being aware of it.

The book is in five sections:

From the Depression to Pearl Harbor

The War in Europe

The War in the Pacific

The Home Front

Reflections

All the histories and reflections are different while the theme is the same. Pride in the country and human concerns abound. There are so many stories and each one is just as exciting to read.

I especially liked...
to look at the photographs and photocopies of everything.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
shed some tears even though I am not the crying type. It is a very touching book.
This Book made me feel...
as if I lived in that time with those people. I felt respect for what they have done and endured.
The author of this Book...
Tom Brokaw is the anchor and editor of NBC Nightly News. A native of South Dakota, he graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in political science. He worked in Omaha and Atlanta before joining NBC in 1966.
I recommend this Book because...
it is another tribute to the greatest generation with history coming alive. This book preserves data we wouldn't otherwise have access to. In hardcover it makes a great living room table book.
