Summary of this Book...
"Miss Camilla Pierpont, a renowned matchmaker and influential member of the New York Four Hundred, has vowed never to marry after suffering a devastating heartbreak during her debut years ago. However, when she is nearly abducted along the Hudson River, she finds herself rescued by an annoyingly outspoken, albeit fascinating, gentleman who challenges her in a manner she wasn't expecting. After learning that Camilla Pierpont has enjoyed success with taking wayward young ladies in hand, Mr. Owen Chesterfield travels to the Hudson River Valley determined to convince Camilla to sponsor his sister, who is in desperate need of social rehabilitation. Knowing her life is in danger, Camilla agrees to Owen's proposition and travels with him to West Virginia, finding herself charmed by the less-than-formal attitude of his small hometown, as well as by Owen himself. But danger waits in the shadows, disrupting what she knows would be the most spectacular match she's ever made--her own." Quoted material above is from the book's Amazon web page. Further Comments...
This was a fun read for me. Although there were certainly perils and suspenseful moments, it was the humor, characters and romance that won me over. This historical Christian romance by Jen Turano sure had something for everyone, especially me. I expected to like the book, because I enjoyed the first two in the series, and I was not disappointed. This was actually my favorite of the series. I haven't seen an announcement that the series will continue, but I hope it does. The book starts right in the middle of the abduction attempt on Camilla in New York and keeps a fast pace most of the way through. Once the heroine and hero met at her home, I was hooked. Camilla and Owen were seemingly an unlikely pair at the beginning, but by the end, it was clear they were perfect for each other. Once Camilla realizes she'd be safer in West Virginia and Owen really is capable of protecting her, she takes his offer to stay at his home and help his sister become a lady (the sister he claimed needed a little polishing, but that Camilla finds out is known as a ragamuffin and unruly lady and has even broken a man's nose by punching it - none of this is considered ladylike behavior in the time of the novel's setting). There were some hilarious and unusual moments that involved cantankerous West Virginia natives, a pet pig, and country-style hazing. As a bonus, Camilla, being a matchmaker at heart, helped with several other romances in the book, so we had multiple couples, one that included Owen's grandmother, making their way towards happily ever after together. I borrowed a copy of this book from my local library. It was 367 pages long. As of October 20, 2024 at about 3:28 pm, it ranked as follows on the Amazon Bestsellers list. I actually thought it would rank higher, being a new release from a popular historical Christian romance author, so once I finish this review I'm going to check out who placed near the top. "Best Sellers Rank: #232,543 in Kindle Store (See Top 100 in Kindle Store) #536 in Historical Christian Romance Fiction #722 in Christian Historical Fiction (Kindle Store) #763 in Christian Historical Romance"
