Summary of this Book...
Funny, but not as funny as I expected. Though, that was a good thing. Jo Brand dispenses advice and her thoughts on all kinds of topics, and all with a bias towards advice for women and girls. . What surprised me the most (and, really, I should have anticipated it) was how much compassion Jo has. You kind of forget, when you watch her on TV or on stage, that she’s a normal person with a family, friends and a past. But this book reminded me of that. She genuinely seems to care about the topics she discusses, like bullying, abuse, mental health. Her advice is interspersed with her own memories from childhood and growing up. I was interested to learn that her father was very depressed at times. It doesn't sound as though her childhood was a lot of fun. I mean, not terrible, but it could have been happier. This book is fun to read. It entertained me from the first page, and Jo's voice was clear throughout. It also made me feel a little less alone in a way.
This type of Book is good for...
Fans of Jo Brand's humour. Although this book is part-serious, part-humour, Jo Brand's voice and sarcastic sense of humour still comes through. It's also quite a good manual for young girls (and grown-up women, actually) about how to value oneself and stand up for oneself and believe in oneself.
I especially liked... | ||
Jo Brand. I felt like she was talking from her previous life as a mental health nurse, and it was like she was speaking directly to me at time.
I didn't like... | ||
There were a couple of times where Jo went on a little too long about certain points she was making. It was a little boring in those places.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Watch Jo Brand on TV. | ||
This Book made me feel...
Happy. Less alone. | ||
The author of this Book...
Jo Brand. The British comedian with, sometimes, an acid tongue. She is great at quick comebacks, and her writing style is exactly like her writing style.
I recommend this Book because...
It's fun and entertaining, whilst giving fantastic advice for women.
I don't recommend this Book because...
If you don't like Jo Brand's humour, you won't like this.
