Another entertaining installment of the Penric & Desdemona series of novellas! This most recent story finds Learned Penric, Divine of the Bastard's Order (with his demon Desdemona, of course) in a new city where he's just arrived. Called in to check on a "madman" as a precaution that the madness isn't being confused with demon possession, Pen determins that indeed, the man is possessed by a rogue demon. As is the luck of a Divine of the God of Chaos, the demon is one that can't be saved, so Pen seeks out the local Saint of the Bastard's Order to come and remove the demon. Thus begins a crazy romp through the city, where everything that can go wrong does. Did I mention it's also Bastard's Eve, his God's Holiday?

Anyone who has read another of the Penric and Desdemona stories. This one doesn't necessarily require knowledge beyond having read the first in the series, Penric's Demon.

Pen and Des both get to spend time with (and learn from) the Saint of the Order, a wise but playful teenage girl who was chosen by the God while a young orphan. She proved wise beyond her years, but wasn't written as a flat "pretty young saint." Her character is well developed and she becomes more interesting as the story evolves.

Lois McMaster Bujold is a master storyteller and this series of novellas is a more lighthearted offshoot within the World of the Five Gods that is the focus of the Chalion series as well as the Sharing Knife series.
