“The Righteous Mind” is a book of psychology and sociology that examines how people come to believe what they do, hold the values they do, and value the morals they do. It also discusses how religion and politics have become so divisive in the past few years and why this might have happened. I found it really insightful and mentally challenging to read about these “taboo” topics where people tend to have strong emotions. It was hard at times to be open-minded, but a really good exercise in tolerance and learning. I think I will have to read the book again because it covered so much. If you are able to read the book from outside of your personal political opinions and religious beliefs, there is a lot to gain. It will help you understand the differing values of people you disagree with and perhaps even understand why they believe what they believe. It will help you empathize with the morals of people you disagree with – an ability that is so important in today’s world.
