“Tomorrow will be Different” by Sarah McBride is a heartbreaking and simultaneously empowering story about a trans woman’s coming out journey, her love and loss journey, and her political activist journey. I enjoyed Sarah’s storytelling and seeing her life through the multiple lenses of her book is really impactful. We first follow Sarah as she navigates coming out to her family, her university, and the world. The struggles of getting her legal gender changed, and her internship at the white house where she meets Andy, a trans man. The two hit it off and support each other in their activist work to pass gender non-discrimination bills in Sarah’s home state of Delaware and then in other states throughout the county. The saddest segment of Sarah’s story is the several chapters dedicated to Andy’s sudden cancer diagnosis and treatment. These are hard to read, especially when the reader knows how Andy’s story will end. Sarah’s retelling of the events are powerful, but deeply tragic. In the end, Andy’s legacy lives on and Sarah is invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention preceding Hillary Clinton’s formal acceptance of the Democratic nomination in 2016. It is a culminating event, but shadowed by what the event would have meant for Sarah and Andy’s relationship. The book overall is a moving and important chronical of the trans movement in the US – and the struggles still faced by the LGBTQA+ community.
