A fairly well-paced story, part mystery, part urban fantasy/magic, part romance. The "big mystery" was somewhat transparent, but the book itself did have some creative twists and turns (but still remained formulaic). The alchemy was definitely interesting and fun, and shockingly, not overdone. To be honest, I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was reminiscent of the Sookie Stackhouse series, but unfortunately was closer to the middle-to-end of the series, where the writing wasn't quite as strong. While many people enjoyed the dialogue, I found it to often be stunted, and the characters fell flat more often than they stood out. The first person narrative wasn't as sharp as it could have been, and although the writing was decent, it wasn't exceptional, and at times it wasn't even good. 90% of the story was intriguing enough, but the romance component didn't work for me at all. It felt cliche. Overall, it's a decent story leading into a series that may have some promise, and though the writing is uneven, for fans of the genre, there should be something here of interest. | ||
