This is a good story that boasts as being to the point and yet touching at the same time.

The main character Kevin has a neighbor, Mr. Jones, a somewhat cantankerous old man, but only at first sight. When Kevin realizes Mr. Jones has difficulty opening his front door, he helps him out and gets to know him better, learning about appreciating other human beings old and decrepit though they may be ; thus, Kevin’s human-heart-against-itself heals and gains a much better perspective.

What I liked about this story is its economy of words and even descriptions. The author just told the story, leaving its interpretation to the reader as the story in itself is a moving one, and any reader would have no problem understanding its depth. As short as the exchanges between the two characters were, each word they used or didn’t use meant something.

The story moved fast and the ending was especially touching, however not unexpected. The setting and characterization were adequate given the perimeters of the story.

On the Other Side was a satisfying read for me, in a way some much more complicated and longer stories cannot achieve.

I believe this new writer is someone like Hemingway or has the capacity to become an author like him as she has the inclination of expressing deep emotions with a very few words, without seeming to do that on purpose.
