Summary of this DVD...
The series is set in the town of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania. The town is a mixture of extreme wealth and poverty, as the closing of the town's steel mill (owned by the Godfrey family) many years earlier cost a lot of people their jobs. Now the town's main sources of employment are the Hemlock Acres Hospital and the Godfrey Institute for Biomedical Technologies. Run by the powerful Godfrey family, the Institute is rumored to have several sinister experiments take place within. The town's rumor mill turns even more twisted when a teenage girl is brutally killed during a full moon. Peter Rumancek, a 17-year-old Romani who just moved to Hemlock Grove with his mother, is suspected of the crimes by some of the townsfolk and is also rumored to be a werewolf. While he secretly really is a werewolf, he isn't the actual killer and along with Roman, the heir to the Godfrey estate (who Peter realizes is an upir- a vampire- , though Roman does not know it himself), they set out to find the killer.
The two become best friends on that journey and get involved into more distorted situations and relationships with other characters as the story continue to develop all while dealing with the monsters they have become.
This type of DVD is good for...
Lovers of the vampire-werewolves myths. The series has unique vision and even use Russian-Ukrainian legends of the upyr the Slavic upior, and the Byelorussian upor which I found interesting because of its characteristics and also because the legend of UPIR (a vampire) is processed first time in a TV show. This wasn't another Edward Cullen or Dracula story.
I especially liked...
Acting crew was an amazing choice for this series. They did awesome job and, to me, they were the only reason why I, actually, decided to give a chance to each season.
I didn't like...
The plot was awful. While overall idea has its charms and is pretty much unique, the plot didn't make any sense. In one moment the series reminded me of Twin Peaks and American Horror Story being merged into Hemlock Grove but it was still far from being great as each of these series. By the time I finished it, I didn't know what was that all about, what was the purpose of each character, what was the moral of the story itself.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Look for more movies or series from Roman who is played by fresh Hollywood meat- Bill Skarsgard.
This DVD made me feel...
Confused. When I just started watching the series, episodes were intriguing, especially because each of them had mysterious endings which made me want to continue watching it to see what will happen next. But the overall plot quality was not good at all. It didn't leave any kind of impression on me nor made me interested. I was probably attracted to Roman the most because the actor who played his role. Other than this I could easily give up on the first episode.
The cast of this DVD...
Famke Janssen as Olivia Godfrey
Bill Skarsgård as Roman Godfrey
Landon Liboiron as Peter Rumancek
Penelope Mitchell as Letha Godfrey (season 1)
Freya Tingley as Christina Wendall (season 1)
Kaniehtiio Horn as Destiny Rumancek (season 2–3; recurring season 1)
Joel de la Fuente as Dr. Johann Pryce (season 2–3; recurring season 1)
Dougray Scott as Dr. Norman Godfrey (season 1–2)
Nicole Boivin (recurring season 1) and Madeleine Martin (season 3; recurring season 2), as Shelley Godfrey, Roman's heavily deformed but good-hearted sister. While Boivin and Martin are the main actresses portraying the character, Shelley's remarkably large figure is provided, when seen from a distance, by Amazon Eve for the first five episodes, and by Michael Andreae thereafter.
Camille De Pazzis as Annie Archambeau (season 3)
I recommend this DVD because...
The cast is amazing, setting is amazing and if you are into wicked or even disgusting scenes then I'm sure you will find Hemlock Grove to be satisfying.
I don't recommend this DVD because...
It is not as good as IMDB overall rating is. I didn't read books and I don't know how much series stayed consistent to it. I was expecting more from Eli Roth who was the executive producer of Hemlock Grove. All the time I felt like something is missing and I didn't know what.
