This is a story about a young man who works as a janitor at M.I.T. (played by Matt Damon) He is a mathematics genuis - one of the best mathematical minds in the world doing problems that are way beyond advanced students and most professors. It comes easily to this young man, who is a troubled soul who has run afoul of the law and authority many times. A Math professor wants to help him and takes him to various psychiatric experts and finally a friend, who is a psychology professor (played by Robin Williams). Through his humanity and his own suffering over his wife's death, Sean (williams) reaches out and gives Will Hunting the guidance that he needs to reach out for happiness with his girlfriend, played by Minnie Driver.

Ben Affleck plays Will's best friend, who roots for his success in life.

This story was written by Damon and Affleck when they were in their early twenties and came at a time when Hollywood was hard up for good stories. It is regarded as a miracle that they got it produced and convinced Williams (a big star) to be involved in their project.

I think it is a good story, though somewhat predictable. Still, it is heartwarming and as a viewer I was rooting for Will to get a life.

Robin Williams in his Oscar winning performance. He is simply grand, as is Damon.

Ben Affleck and the friend's accents. I found them difficult to understand when I first saw the film and now, seeing it 18 years after it was released.

I don't think this is one of the greatest films of all time. I do think it is a good story with good performances that stands out as exceptional because of what Damon and Affleck accomplished in getting it produced and winning Oscars for their screenplay. I have always thought that Damon is a much better actor than Affleck and that hasn't changed.
