The Martian follows the life of an astronaut stranded on Mars during a botched evacuation during a storm. His suit is breached and by chance he survives, despite health data transmitted to the crew that indicates he has died. The novel details his survival and travels on Mars along with continued attempts to connect with NASA in hopes of rescue.

The humorous log entries written by Mark Watney, the stranded astronaut. His humor in the face of disaster is encouraging and gives the reader hope for his future.

Excited about the future of space travel and curious about whether the nation would rally to get an astronaut back at any cost or would decide it wasn't worth the expense.

This novel was entertaining and moved at a fast pace. It did not focus on relationships as much as it focused on the emotions and challenged faced by Mark in his quest for survival.

There is some swearing in the book as the logs are written by the surviving astronaut.
