Summary of this DVD... | ||
This is hilarious - I own the DVD. It is one of the first screwball comedies in film history and consistently appears on the lists of best movies of all time. The story involves an heiress who is spoiled. Defying her father, she marries a playboy. When her father refuses to go along with the elopement, she jumps off their yacht and runs away, taking buses as she travels to New York. On her way she meets an unemployed newspaper reporter, named Peter Warne (Clark Gable). They irritate each other right off the bat, but become reluctant traveling companions. In one hilarious scene Peter Warne teaches the heiress, Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) to hitchhike. He is not successful in this endeavor, but when she sticks her leg out the driver slamps to a stop to give them a ride. This is full of innuendo and humor, with quick witted insults slung back and forth by Colbert and Gable. Both won Oscars for their roles and the movie won Best Picture of 1934. It is a great, funny and timeless film.
I especially liked... | ||
Clark Gable's humor about putting up a blanket "Wall of Jericho" in all the motels where they stay. It is funny, too, how her outfit is perfectly pressed every day. Supposedly, Gable's character takes care of that every night.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
watch it again very soon. It is hilarious!
The cast of this DVD... | ||
is great, but Gable and Colbert are the standouts. Gable established himself as a great comedian with other films starring Jean Harlow and with this film.
I recommend this DVD because...
it is 5 years before Gone With The Wind and it is a young Gable on the verge of superstardome. He is amazing in this part.
Further Comments... | ||
For 1934, the humor is pretty sophisticated. This was made at the same time that Hitler was romping around Germany so you can see what life was like then, on the road in the United States. Very funny movie!
