This poetry collection is one of my favorites of the modern era. I immediately fell in love with Voigt's strong word choice and amazing ability to manipulate a reader's emotions. Masterfully written!

The content itself is interesting as well. The collection is about the 1918 flu pandemic, and each poem paints a unique picture of how this must have affected members of small communities across the country. A number of pieces are written as war letters to a soldier fighting a different type of war... WWI.

Anyone interested in the historical significance of the pandemic may enjoy the collection. Those who adore free verse as much as I do may be wowed as well, particularly if they enjoy bleak and dark poems with (at times) disturbing imagery.

The individual poems are untitled. Let's just say that there are many pieces that I have read countless times in addition to reading the entire collection as I would any other book.

I wanted to read it again piece by piece. I skipped around first. Then I read the entire collection cover-to-cover. After that, I reread many pieces a number of times before rereading the entire collection once more. Needless to say, I have read it many times, and I never grow bored with it.

It is a fine length, but I wish it was longer simply because I love it.
