When her three uncles suddenly show up at her front door, English teacher Jody Linder is unnerved, but when she hears what they have to say, she feels shock and panic, together with her entire family.

The man convicted of murdering Jody’s father is being released from prison and is coming back to Rose, Kansas, and feeling she may be in danger, her uncles want her to move in with her grandparents at the ranch.

Jody's parents Hugh Jay and Laurie Linder were killed while the three-year old Jody slept in her crib twenty-six years ago. As the original verdict had holes in it, now Billy Crosby the killer is released, thanks to the efforts of his son Collin Crosby.

Collin, who has become a lawyer, is a little older than Jody. While they grew up in the same town, the two of them have carefully avoided each other in the past, even though some kind of an attraction was there from their childhood years.

After this day, Billy's guilt becomes a puzzle for Jody that she feels she must solve, and she discovers that Billy was too drunk to commit that murder.

Eventually, a good amount of family history comes out into the open, and the reader, together with Jody discovers what exactly happened during the night of the murder.

the setting, as it had reflected the life in a small town in Kansas and the Monument Rocks located in Gove County.

that the ending became too complicated, and somewhat rushed. It was too sudden a change in pace for me.

It is well written with interesting characters and a great setting, in spite of the way the murders were uncovered suddenly at a lightning pace. at the end.
