Oh, do I ever love this show. It is about a London Chief Detective Inspector, whose wife is murdered by a gangster in league with corrupt officers in the Met. When this happens, Detective Inspector George Gently decides to retire and go to the Northeast part of the country to solve a case in order to solve his wife's murder.

While he is there, he is assigned to work with this weird young Sargent named John Bacchus. Bacchus is a punk with a lot of weird attitudes and prejudices. At the end of the case, George Gently decides to remain in the Northeast to straighten out Bacchus, much to the young man's chagrin.

They become partners, who snap at each other the whole time. The action takes place in the 1960s, with Bacchus getting a Beatles haircut at the time of the height of their fame.

This show is alternately funny, sad and poignant. Martin Shaw is a joy to watch as Gently and Lee Ingleby as Bacchus grew on me. I must admit it. I eagerly await Season 6 on Netflix.

anyone who enjoys a wonderfully intelligent mystery with conflict between the policemen assigned to the cases.

everything about this show. I especially like the music they use in the later episodes as the 60's roll on.

is wonderful. As this is a current show, a lot of the cast of Downton Abbey shows up on it.

it is one of the best detective shows I've ever seen. The whole setting and the interplay between the main characters make it a joy to watch.
