Summary of this DVD...
This is a remake of a miniseries my Dad watched many years ago. My Dad has been gone for 18 years, so it is way before 1995 that this was on TV. I do not know why they wanted to remake it for film when the Miniseries was so acclaimed.

It is the story of a middle class guy, Charles Ryder, who goes to Oxford. He befriends Sebastian, a fellow from a filthy rich titled family. Charles goes home with Sebastian and falls for Sebastian's sister Julia. This creates problems because Sebastian is gay and in love with Charles. Add to the mix a crazy Catholic mother (Emma Thompson) who is obsessed with making her kid feel bad about themselves.

There is a lot of suffering and unhappiness which sometimes makes Catholic matriarchs feel good about themselves while they ruin their children's lives.

I do not understand that whole thing, I confess.

This was part of a 6 DVD DVD I got for Christmas. I was glad to know the story - I think the Miniseries was considered very shocking at the time it aired because of Sebastian being gay and kissing Charles, which seems very tame today.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who wants to see the condensed story. My Dad told me the miniseries was great, so if you want to see great, I recommend that.
I didn't like...
the whole dark religious guilt thing.
This DVD made me feel...
like I am glad to finally know the story.
The cast of this DVD...
is not great. The guy who plays Charles is no Jeremy Irons, that's for sure.
