American Harriet Redgrave is too brash, to intelligent, and too wealthy. She ends up in England after the ship on which she is sailing off the coast of New England is captured. She shows up on the doorstep of the grandfather she never met, who had disowned her mother for running away with an American sea captain. Harriet's grandfather appeals to Madame X, the premiere matchmaker in London, to find a husband for his granddaughter.

Off to Scotland they go, to the home of Duncan Maclachlan, Earl of Thornton, for a house party that is really a spy mission for the Earl's good friend, the Duke of Marchford.

The first thing Harriet does upon arrival is set her room on fire with a chemistry experiment. She also captures the attention of the Earl of Thornton, who has vowed never to marry an heiress despite being in dire straits financially.

All Harriet wants is to return home to America . . . and do some chemistry experiments. Unfortunately, the seed has been planted in the minds of the fortune hunters in the group that she is very wealthy, and suddenly she has more suiters than she can handle. Another rumor is planted that she has lost her fortune, which leaves her quite alone.

She is inadvertently successful in helping apprehend the spy. And quite inadvertently successful in capturing the heart of the Earl.

Harriet was a feisty and intelligent character.
