Following the deaths of her parents, Madeline is in her stepbrother's cruel control. To force her to marry a man of his choosing, he betrothes her against her will, allows the other man to take her virginity and beats/tortures her in effort to get her agreement.
Laird Alexander Grant knows that he may be leading his clan to war, but he cannot leave the lady in her current situation. He rescues her, but is it too late for Madeline? Can she live a normal life after all she has suffered?

The bad guys were almost 100% evil. It would have been nice to see some balance to them.
Also, the list of things that Madeline had suffered through seemed never-ending. Half of that list would have been sufficient!!

emotional. I did get weepy. It was nice to have the happy ending after all the drama poor Madeline had gone through.

Madeline is an exceptional character. The author never suggests that she isn't changed by what happened to her, but uses those changes to move the story forward, and make her the best possible choice for the heroine.

If you have ever been a victim of sexual violence, I strongly suggest you don't read this book. I believe the author treated the issue as realistically as she could, including the ongoing repercussions of such an event, but don't put yourself through that.
Also, if you can't stomach reading about violence or violent men, don't read this.

The sexual violence is not included as a scene, but is discussed by the characters.
