Summary of this Book...
Since the 1960s Heidi Holland wants and works to attain a career as a successful art historian. The play's main themes deal with the changing role of women from 60s on, describing both Heidi's dedicated feminism and, a three decades later, her sense of betrayal by the inadequacy of the women's movement. Though most of the characters are women, there are two important male characters; Peter Patrone, a gay pediatrician who is Heidi's best friend, and Scoop Rosenbaum, a magazine editor who marries and has many affairs. He's the one Heidi has loved but their relationship was not to be because Scoop neither respected nor accepted a woman's right to a career and her own way of thinking.The play was later made into a movie, starring Tom Hulce and Jamie Lee Curtis.
I especially liked... | ||
the honesty of the author's insight into women who have lived through those decades.
The author of this Book...
Wendy Wasserstein (1950-2006) was a Pulizer and Tony award winning American playwright and teacher at Cornell University.
I recommend this Book because...
it is true to life. This could have been any woman's story who lived in those years and fought for women's rights.
Further Comments... | ||
I listened to this play on two audio CDs read by very competent actors. It was next best thing to seeing it on stage.
