Club Justice is a cop story, cloaked in biker culture, with the theme of revenge. It is also a woman’s story even if the female characters are only allies of the protagonist or the antagonist.

Zeke and Ginny with their three children make a stable family. Zeke is a biker and a cop. When misfortune follows him and his wife, he can’t figure out the mysterious source of their bad luck. Then, after several twists and turns, the plot unravels to a gratifying end. Plus, to the reader’s satisfaction, the villain finds his comeuppance eventually, although who he is and his malevolence stay hidden in the beginning. The author comes up with so many red herrings that I could not safely predict who the true villain was until the last chapters.

The novel is written well, and it only took me a short while to wrap my understanding around the biker lingo and culture, but the author has done such a masterful job with it that the book became a delightful journey, a page turner, especially past the midway point when the action picked up. For a novel that can belong to a genre, the main characters are real, alive, and convincing as they are portrayed well beyond any genre requirements. What is more, these characters evoke reader empathy, which shows McBain’s skill as a writer.

The second book, to be published at or toward the end of 2012, promises to feature one of Zeke and Ginny’s children. I can hardly wait…
