What's Wrong

He looks at me and says,
"Dear, what's wrong with you?"
"You're awfully quiet tonight,
is there something I can do?"

I think to myself, what's wrong? He says?
Does he really want to know?
Where's he been, does he have the faintest clue?
Should I let my feelings flow?

So in my head I try to process
and organize my thoughts,
to be able to tell him calmly
why my stomach's tied in knots.

I talked to Mom a bit ago
she is getting oh so frail.
In that big house all alone
what if she slipped and fell?

Then there is my oldest sister
who lost her husband last year.
I hope she gets some sleep tonight
without shedding one more tear.

My brother he has so many things
he is dealing with alone.
Tough love, it's hard for me to do,
I want to talk to him on the phone.

Oh no! The phone! The bill's past due.
Did his check get deposited today?
I hope it did or else I guess
The dial tone will go away.

Tone . . . oh yeah that's another thing
my daughter was crying about.
The girls at school can be so mean
because she is so stout.

If you're not just perfect
all tan and tone, then you don't fit in
Do they have a clue of how she cries
because she's not like them?

Then there is Brian, he moved away
to the city. It seems so far.
Is he eating good? Is he warm tonight?
Is he out with friends in a car?

The car! The oil should be changed
it started making that ticking sound.
Ticking! Oh no, I forgot the vet,
I saw ticks all over that hound.

The thoughts are spinning when he says again,
Is something wrong? Something on your mind?
So I smile and say I'm sorry dear,
Nothing, nothing is wrong, I'm fine.
