A ballad of the American Revolutionary War period. Written Dec 8, revised Dec 11, 2000.
Upon a sleek snowy white steed
                   He rode, he rode.
Upon a sleek snowy white steed,
         Into the deep green meadow,
With a letter in his pack,
                   Rode he, rode he.
With a letter in his pack
And a sigh in his eye and chest.

Through the tall grasses that whip
                   He rode, he rode.
Through the tall grasses that whip,
         Onto the thin forest path,
Thinking of things grave and grim,
                   Rode he, rode he.
Thinking of things grave and grim
Of the past and the last days spent.

Watched by hawks and sparrows
                   He rode, he rode.
Watched by hawks and sparrows,
         Into the cold creek water,
Remembering times gone by,
                   Rode he, rode he.
Remembering times gone by;
Full of glee and free memories.

Spraying freezing water 'round
                   He rode, he rode.
Spraying freezing water 'round,
Into rye fields gold and high,
Seeing visions of battle,
                   Rode he, rode he.
Seeing visions of battle
Closing his eyes, cursing the skies.

Sunlight bleeding down on all
                   He rode, he rode.
Sunlight bleeding down on all,
         Onto the lady's moist dirt,
Praying he could find good words
                   Rode he, rode he.
Praying he could find good words
To, in solace, pass to the lass.

Past the whispering willows
                   He rode, he rode.
Past the whispering willows,
To in front of sweet Sue's door,
Spreading the horrible truth,
                   Rode he, rode he.
Spreading the horrible truth
That her love had risen above.
