May and George sat down on a bench overlooking the river.
So in love, they sit down on a bench,
To leave their families was a wrench,
But it will not be long until the day
They meet again, have so much to say.

May cuddles up to George, snuggles down,
Happy to be free from the bustling town.
She feels as if she's a queen of the realm,
Sitting quietly by the lovely River Yealm.

George runs his hand over the shiny wood,
He loves carpentry and if he possibly could
He'd make many benches just like these,
So that weary people could take their ease.

Free of the rat race, fast-paced living,
He'd like to be the one that was giving
Places where others could take their rest,
For he's a very kind man, one of the best.

A bench gives comfort, May was a nurse,
Now she's cared for, there's a reverse
Of her life as a wife, granny and mother,
Loves only George, never wants any other.

A love affair since nineteen forty three
When they both had vowed 'I take thee'.
Now they sit side by side holding hands,
They hope that their family understands.

Their love still burns, an eternal flame,
They must return from whence they came.
Reunited in death, their souls are saved,
They stand and read the words engraved.

A plaque fixed on the back of the seat,
States 'In Loving Memory' life complete.
May and George, may you Rest In Peace.
Remembered; your love will never cease.
